Mrs. Stephan, or Dona Florencia, as she was also known, came to La Gemora to teach the children of Mario Novaro Parodi, an Italian who had married into an Italian family on the island and owned a cannery in La Cantera, in the municipality of Alajero. When Mrs. Stephan retired, she had the Casa de la Paz built in Hermigua and set about realizing her dream of building a sanctuary in the middle of the El Cedro forest."
