Märkisch Buchholz Village Church

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1346 a church in Buchholz was first mentioned in a document. However, no traces of it have survived in the 21st century. During the Second World War the church was badly damaged and burned out. The reconstruction took several decades and was completed with a new coat of paint in the 2000s.

The circular hiking trail was conceived by Austrian media artist Wolfgang Georgsdorf and realized in collaboration with the Brandenburg State Forestry Authority, the Hammer Forestry Office. Along the 18-kilometer-long trail, which takes the form of a literary forest walk along the banks of the Dahme River through the forest and heath landscape of the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park, reading stations with texts from world literature invite visitors to linger approximately every 300 meters.

You can see a moor forest here. Moors occur in damp locations. Here, the dead plant material in the water can not completely decompose due to lack of oxygen and peat is formed. Over millennia, this peat layer grew about 1 mm per year and formed a moor. On this relatively stable ground birch and pine trees could settle. In contrast to their conspecifics on drier and nutrient-rich locations, they grow on the nutrient-poor moorland, however, much smaller and more crippled. In damp years, some trees die to regrow in dry years. This natural process is typical of bog forests.
In addition to the moor birch and moor pines, there are other specialists who can cope with the nutrient-poor and humid living conditions.
The round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), for example, simply "catches" the nutrients from the air. Insects stick to its sticky leaves and are dissolved by a digestive secretion. Thus, the sundew receives the vital Nitrogen.
The Evergreen Bog-Porst (Rhododendron tomentosum) pursues the strategy of thriftiness. For this he forms leathery and slightly rolled down leaves with dense reddish-brown hair felts on the underside. As a result, he transpires less and his metabolism is slowed down. So he gets along well with the few nutrients.
The moor frog (Rana arvalis) stands out especially at mating time by its blue color.
Further information will be available soon on a local board.

Dahme Floodplain Forest

Highlight • Forest

In the transition from river to land, regular floods and the influence of groundwater create diverse habitats. Floodplains are among the most biodiverse ecosystems in Europe. In the meantime alluvial forests in Germany have become very rare. Straightened and deepened rivers are barely overflowing. The formative change of flooding and dry traps has been lost in many places today. Alluvial forests were cut down and floodplains drained by ditches. Thus, the resulting meadow areas could be used well.
The Aue der Dahme is also riddled with many small ditches. These drain the meadows so that they can be used. But just the change between pastures, meadows and bog forests makes the Dahmeaue so sexy. Sometimes a beaver looks past and leaves its typical traces.
Typical tree species of the alluvial forest are alders, ash and willow. These tree species are well adapted to the difficult living conditions. For example, the black alder (Alnus glutinosa) makes sting roots to breathe. The pasture has similar mechanisms. The oxygen is absorbed above ground via special cells and transported to the deeper roots.

On an information board on the spot there will soon be more to learn about alluvial forests.

It was very nice, this year-end hike with sunshine and a blue sky. A very nice and quiet part of the Dahme embedded in beautiful nature there.
That calls for exploring by canoe on warmer summer days 🛶 ☀️ 🏞️

90% forest floor, well signposted. Very varied thanks to the signs with sayings from different poets. Parking at the church in Märkisch-B. Sufficient rest stops available. Follow the white feather!

Who a river hike....it's a forest hike. The Dahme is almost always visible, is only frequented from time to time, but it's a good thing that the little dog can drink and bathe. Halfway through Herrmann's market economy in Märkisch Buchholz, sooo cute, everything old preserved, lots of outdoor seating, totally rustic inside, you could spend hours here. Shortly thereafter …

I wasn't expecting anything and I don't know the area, but!, so great nature, a lot of peace and quiet and animals in peace and in harmony with nature. A great round that I will definitely repeat 🥰

The Dahme between Märkisch Buchholz and the Hermsdorfer Mühle is a picturesque stretch of river. The "Lesefährte Waldweisen" (Waldwiesen reading trail), an art and culture project run by the Hammer forestry company, leads through the forests and along the Dahme, with boards on which poetic texts about the forest can be read.
