Wasserschloss Oberstadt

Highlight • Castle

The Wasserburg awarded the Counts of Henneberg 1380 as a fief to the Lords of Kießling. In 1397 the castle was destroyed as a robber's nest. The bower is still preserved. 1469 followed the Marschalk of Ostheim and 1606 the Hennebergische supervisor Humpert von Langen. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Kemenate was extended to Wasserburg and rebuilt in 1607 to the present moated castle. (Source: Wikipedia) Johann Georg von Langen, the founder of modern, regular forestry, was born here in 1699. The castle is extensively renovated and is now privately owned. Although it can not be visited inside, but offers a charming sight even from the outside.

The man is worth a look into his life:
Johann Georg von Langen (born March 22, 1699 in Upper Town, † May 25, 1776 in Jægersborg near Copenhagen) was a German forestry and Oberjägermeister and Norwegian Generalforstmeister.

Langen was born as the eldest son of the originally Emslander family of Langen in the manor house Oberstadt, which had acquired his ancestor Humpert of Langen († 1614) in 1606. His father was the feudal lord of Oberstadt and his mother court lady with the Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen. In his youth von Langen worked as Hofpage. When the Duchess died, he moved to the court of her brother, Duke Ludwig Rudolf of Brunswick-Lüneburg to Blankenburg in the Harz. Already in 1716 he was called a hunting page. In 1719, the Duke allowed him an educational journey and. a. to the farms in Stuttgart, Munich and Vienna, to further educate themselves in hunting. When he returned to Blankenburg after many years, he carried out the taxation and surveying of the Harz forest.

In 1737 he went through the mediation of Count Christian Ernst to Stolberg-Wernigerode to Norway, to work there on behalf of King Christian VI. of Denmark to promote mining and forestry. Its main site was Kongsberg. In 1742 he returned to Braunschweigische due to various difficulties and initially spent some time in Wernigerode and Blankenburg, before he became head of the forests in Fürstenberg in the Weserkreis. Due to unrest in the Seven Years War he returned in 1760 in the Harz. Due to an intrigue, the victim of which he became, he decided in 1763 to enter a second time in Danish services. There he ordered, among other things, the forestry conditions on the island of Zealand. (Source in excerpts: Wikipedia)

Celtic Cross on Questenberg

Highlight • Monument

The Celtic Cross on the Questenberg near Oberstadt features a Celtic ritual place. In southern and western Thuringia, there is much evidence of colonization by Celtic tribes. For example, on the nearby Kleine Gleichberg (also district Hildburghausen) or at Sünna (Wartburg district), with the reconstructed Celtic village. All interesting tour destinations!

St. Nicholas Church (Schmeheim)

Highlight • Religious Site

The listed[1] Evangelical Lutheran village church of St. Nicholas is located in the middle of the municipality of Schmeheim on a small hill in the district of Hildburghausen in Thuringia.
The construction time is uncertain. The mention of the churchyard in a feudal deed from 1418 testifies to the existence of a church at that time. The existing church was expanded in 1697 and completely renovated in 1836 and 1876. In 1911 the stairwell was added.

The bronze bells were confiscated for armament purposes in both world wars. The small bell from 1921 and the large bell were reinstalled in 1958.

The baptismal font with the year 1593 was found in 1997 on a farm. He's back in the church now.

The organ with a baroque front from 1787 was rebuilt several times in the 19th century and replaced in 1886 by a new building by the organ builder Kühn.

Marisfeld Castle

Highlight • Castle

In the south of Thuringia in the district of Hildburghausen you can discover a little jewel. It is the former moated castle of Marisfeld, which was first mentioned in documents around 1100 and was destroyed several times in the Middle Ages. Today's excellently restored building with its striking four towers dates from 1665 and is used by the Diakonisches Werk as a children's home.
