Trail along the Inde

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

I confess: I am in love with the Inde.
That was me at first sight when I moved from Eupen to Aachen earlier this year.
What a lovely river, which meanders beautifully through its bed.
The slightly higher forest on the bank is also a celebration of shades of green, from moss to ferns and leaves (not now, in autumn, of course... but the moss ground remains fantastically beautiful even in contrast with shades of brown).

The fact that I walked there completely alone twice makes it even more special.

We were very excited about this beautiful river landscape. It went over roots and partly through the Inde. Sturdy shoes are recommended

Raeren Castle and Haus Raeren

Highlight • Castle

Burg Raeren is a moated castle from the end of the 14th century, located near the confluence of the Periolbach and the Iterbach and still partly surrounded by a moat. The original castle was dependent on the Marienstift in Aachen (now Aachen Cathedral), the first known owner was Johann von Alensberg in 1474. The castle was thoroughly changed and expanded in 1583 by Philip von Lomont, bailiff of Walhorn.

Haus Raeren is an excellently preserved, little changed moated castle in beautiful surroundings, which is still surrounded by its moat fed by the Iterbach. Imposing keep with rectangular plan as residential tower in bluestone, nowadays with a high, four-sided slate roof. Haus Raeren, probably the seat of the original lordship, was owned by Carsilius von der Roetschen at the beginning of the 15th century and then in 1443 by his brother-in-law, Emerich von Bastogne. It was his son Emerich, husband of Johanna von Hochkirchen, or he himself, who built the current moated castle.

High Bridge (Raeren)

Highlight • Bridge

The High Bridge spans the Periolbach south of Raeren Castle. It was built of bluestone in the 18th century. The carters, who were on their way with their loaded carts from Botz, Rott and Pley in the direction of Raeren Castle to get to Aachen, could use the Periolbach as a route. The purpose of the high arch is to enable the sometimes highly laden carts to pass through.
The entrance followed at Katzenkönkel, where the river water was dammed.
