The man from Jührdenerfeld was discovered on 19th November 1934 while digging a drainage ditch by the peat cutter Heinrich Stöfer from Wapeldorf in Hochmoor and brought the following day to the State Museum of Natural History and Prehistory in Oldenburg. The dead man lay in an elongated, natural depression in the bog, above it lay three thick sharpened, up to 160 cm long and about arm-thick wooden piles of alder and rowan. One of the piles lay longitudinally on the dead man, the others above it, at arm and pelvic level, wedged transversely into the wall of the depression to keep the body in place.
