Großer Bornhorster See

Highlight • Lake

The Great Bornhorster Lake is an excavated lake, the soil of which was removed for the construction of the nearby A29 motorway and the Hunte Bridge. The Lake Bornhorster is the largest lake in the urban area of Oldenburg and is the second largest lake in the Oldenburg region after the Zwischenahner Meer. It is around 1000 meters long and up to 700 meters wide. An almost 4km long bike path leads around the lake

The nature reserve is notable for its occurrence of the swamp calla. This plant is now rare in Central Europe. Here it still occurs in large stocks. For reasons of species protection, I do not give the exact locations here.

The Gellener Torfmöörte is a former nature reserve in Lower Saxony. Today it belongs to the nature reserve "Gellener Torfmöörte with Rockenmoor and Fuchsberg". A moor nature trail leads through the high moor or low moor.

The Kleiner Bornhorster See (Little Bornhorst Lake) covers 20 hectares and has a circumference of approximately two kilometers. It is one of the larger lakes in the Oldenburg urban area and the surrounding area. It is almost circular in shape and measures just under 500 meters north-south, with the east and west shores up to 600 meters apart. To the north, a small peninsula juts out into the lake, forming a kind of lake angle. The lake lies 0 meters above sea level. On the west shore, there is a sandy beach approximately 150 meters long and up to 40 meters wide, as well as numerous sunbathing areas. The Kleiner Bornhorster See is an official swimming lake monitored by the DLRG (German Lifesaving Association).

400 meters south of it lies the Grosser Bornhorster See, which is more than twice as large. The A29 federal highway runs between the Kleiner Bornhorster See and Groß Bornhorst or Etzhorn, just 200 meters from the west shore. The lake owes its existence to the expressway ring around Oldenburg: the soil taken from the lake was needed to build the ramp to the Hunte high bridge as well as the embankments of the A 293 and the northern bypass.

July 10, 2021,Von den Bornhorster Seen durch die Gellener Torfmöörte
The start and finish point of our tour are the small and large Bornhorster lakes. Both lakes were created between 1973 and 1976 when filler sand was needed for the construction of the A 29 motorways and the so-called “northern bypass”. Today the lakes are popular local recreation areas for Oldenburg residents for bathing, swimming, sailing, surfing and stand-up paddling. …

Today, my path led me from the idyllic Bornhorster See to the Gellener Moortörte in the Ipweger Moor.
The route was varied, with sand and gravel paths.
Due to the drought, the moor lakes were only one-third full of water.
At the same time, it was clear that the entire moorland area was being renaturalized, and new moor lakes were …
