Isla Canela Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Isla Canela Tower (Torre de Isla Canela) was built between 1585 and 1608 as a defense tower against attacks by corsairs and other European cities that were at war with the Spanish monarchy, e.g. England. The south Atlantic coast of the crown of Castile from Gibraltar to the border with the Kingdom of Portugal was a poor and sparsely populated area that, unlike the Levant coast, had no medieval fortifications, but rather urban castles, such as the one in Huelva and its inhabitants, constant looting and invasions were exposed. The tower was part of a system of towers built between Gibraltar and Ayamonte on the orders of King Felipe II.
