Port of La Hume

Highlight • Structure

The local Cabanes (oyster huts) have a long history: as early as the second half of the 19th century, the first simple wooden huts were built here by sailors and fishermen. In 1959, a central earth mound (terre-plein) was created to specifically settle modern oyster farming businesses. In the mid-1980s, one of the harbour basins was also converted into a marina. Nevertheless, the typical, closely lined wooden huts have completely preserved their rustic character. Today, the huts in the port of La Hume are divided between active workplaces of the ostréiculteurs (oyster farmers) and cosy tasting spots. Holidaymakers and locals particularly appreciate the huts for the Dégustation: Sitting directly on the country's water channel, you can enjoy freshly harvested oysters from the Bassin d'Arcachon, seafood, as well as regional wine and pâté on wooden benches. As the harbour is a little more intimate and quieter compared to the large Port de Larros, the Cabanes offer a particularly family-friendly atmosphere. What is also unique to La Hume is the direct proximity to the fine, tamarisk-lined sandy beach – a walk along the colourful huts can be perfectly combined with a day at the beach or a bike tour.
