When Stolp's new town hall was completed in 1901 after only two years of construction, the residents were not sparing in their criticism. Not only that it cost a whopping 600,000 marks twice as much as originally estimated. It also seemed to contemporaries to be much too big and pompous for a provincial town with 30,000 inhabitants.
