The city gate consists of two heavy round towers, between which there is a gate entrance. The towers date from the 11th century and already existed when William the Conqueror had to moor in this place with his fleet in 1066 before sailing to England. The towers have served as a watchtower and as a prison. The drawbridge was demolished in 1614 and the defenses that once extended in front of the gate no longer exist.
