The beautiful and emblematic Biarritz. A treasure where I return every year to spend the day.

Grande Plage of Biarritz

Highlight • Beach

Biarritz is a pretty town crossed by the Vélodyssé along the ocean.

Pleasant, the city is still very touristy in high season.

View of Villa Belza

Highlight • Historical Site

Villa Beltza (or Belza) is a neo-medieval villa built between 1880 and 1895 on the rocky coast of Biarritz. In 1882, the land was sold to Ange Dufresnay, general manager of the insurance company Phoenix in Paris. The construction of a house is entrusted to the architect Alphonse Bertrand assisted by the contractor A. Joly. It follows a rectangular plan embellished by a neo-medieval dungeon and a pepper pot turret built by Dominique Morin in 1889. The unusual situation of the villa on the rocks, its proximity to the "Trou du Diable" (a chasm where the waves pass under the road during strong storms), the name "Belza" meaning black in Basque, have fueled legends of witchcraft or ghosts. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Beltza

View from Chapelle de la Madeleine

Highlight • Religious Site

The Madeleine Chapel is one of the most emblematic sites in the town of Bidart. Destroyed by a hurricane in 1817, it was rebuilt in 1820. Its esplanade offers an exceptional panorama of the Basque coast.

Once it crosses into France, Euro-Velo 1 becomes the well-managed and more aptly named Vélodissée, and this paved section gives a first taste of the glorious stretches of biker-only dedicated bike trail awaiting all the way North along the mostly flat Atlantic Westcoast up to Nantes.

A bit like a roller coaster ride, it goes up and down, it never gets boring.

Easy route on the cycle path to Biarritz which runs almost entirely along the coast offering beautiful views.

We recommend not to park the car around Biarritz since this place is very crowded during the Summer. Try to start the bike ride somewhere between Biarritz and St-Jean-de-Luz instead.
After having no more battery on my phone, we can add 5 more kms.
But the panorama of the Basque coast is always
so beautiful...

the worst stretch of our trip from Ré to St Jean. Badly signposted and secure, the climb to Guetary beach impracticable for any loaded bike, in short, very beautiful panoramas but a hassle on a bike

I forgot to record the first 3 km (from the end)
