Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The stretch of the W&OD from Leesburg to Purcellville (~10 miles) is by far the best section.

At 582 feet, Clarkes Gap, was the highest point on the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad. The stone bridge dates from the 1870s, but instead of a railway line now going underneath, there is a recreational trail and this is a super trail for cycling.

All told, this converted rail trail runs for 45 miles through Virginia. The surface is a mix of pavement and crushed stone. You'll also find a good few bike shops along its length, offering bike rentals, repairs, and also beer, coffee, and snacks.

No matter what you like to have on your ride you can find it here. There's great beer, and food, but also coffee and pastries. It's location along the W&OD Trail make it the perfect spot to begin and end your ride, or make it your turn around point to have a break and a beverage.

W&OD Trail — Leesburg section

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Completely paved and totaling right around 45 miles, the Washington & Old Dominion Trail is a super popular option for paved bike riding around the area. You can use the trail to make different loops or just do out and backs. Some sections (like this one) spend a good bit of time near cars and city streets, while other sections are through fields and countryside.
