Oppidum of Caestert

Highlight • Historical Site

Plateaus and hills often hide a past. So is this place on the plateau of Caestert where remains of an oppidum, a large Celtic fortification, were found. It was so large (about 20 hectares) that it must have had an important place in the Iron Age. Built in the period from 250 to 20 BC, the fortification might even be Atuatuca, the fortress in the Eburones area that Caesar mentioned in his 'De Bello Gallico' and where Roman troops once stayed. However, where Atuatuca was located remains a matter of debate. For a long time, people mainly thought of Tongeren, but in addition to the Oppidum of Caestert, people also thought of Warworm, Battice, Chaudfontaine and many more places. Be that as it may, this place here has historical importance. During excavations in 1973-1975 and 2008-2011, test trenches exposed the murus Gallicus of the original hilltop castle, as well as a northern extension consisting of a rampart with palisade. The location is also ideal because this is about the narrowest part of the Plateau of Caestert, where you could keep an eye on both the Maas valley and the Jeker valley from the height castle that was located here.
