L'église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens, une église fortifiée

Highlight • Other

In the heart of old Bassan, the church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens reveals a history far richer than a simple village church. Mentioned as early as 1118, it is believed to have been built on the site of an old chapel. The building retains a Romanesque architecture modified in the 12th century, before undergoing other transformations over the centuries.

Its peculiarity is that it was transformed into a veritable defensive site in the 14th century: its reinforced buttresses supported machicolations, and its bell tower, about 20 meters high, served as a watchtower. At that time, during the Hundred Years' War, the villages of Languedoc had to protect themselves from looters and armed bands that roamed the region; the church could then become a refuge for the inhabitants in case of threat.

The interior also deserves special attention. The significant restoration work carried out between October 2012 and March 2013 has brought back to life the painted decorations from the 19th century, including a remarkable figurative ensemble in the choir retracing in particular the life of Saint Peter. This campaign also concerned the stained glass windows, which today bring colorful light to the building.

This southern Gothic church, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, has accompanied the village's history for over seven hundred years. Its sober architecture hides numerous transformations: the different construction phases remain visible on the facades, while its imposing bell tower, remodeled in the 17th century and then restored in the 1950s, is distinguished by its green glazed spire, which has become one of the village's emblems.

As you leave the churchyard, take the time to discover the old alleyways and the Fontaine à la Grenouille (Frog Fountain), whose spring is said to have favored the birth of Saint-Geniès-de-Fontedit.

In the heart of Lieuran-lès-Béziers, the Saint-Martin church bears witness to nearly nine centuries of history. Mentioned as early as 1145, it still preserves several elements from its Romanesque origins of the 12th century today, notably its apse, its choir bay, and its bell tower.
The building also tells the story of the village's transformations over time. In the 19th century, after the collapse of the old nave, a new part was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style, giving birth to this church where medieval heritage and more recent architecture coexist.
Its most precious heritage is hidden in its bell tower: two bells from the 12th century, classified as Historical Monuments, have crossed the centuries. They have accompanied the daily lives of the inhabitants for nearly nine hundred years, marking the hours, religious festivals, and the community's great moments.
