Shelter at the village pond

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The village pond in Oberstoppel is right on the main road. A fence has been put up around the pond to keep small children away from the water. Magnificent aquatic plants grow on the bank of the pond. In the middle of the pond is a small house that is obviously just waiting for boarders or other water birds to move in. There is even a short jetty on which the brave can take a few steps across the water.

Really well-preserved ruins with a great view and lots of seating. But the ascent is quite strenuous.

The effort of the climb, whether on foot or by bike, is rewarded by the magnificent view.
The ruins of the summit castle lie on the summit of the 524 m high Stoppelsberg in the Kuppenrhön, the remnant of a volcanic vent formed in the Miocene. The keep of Hauneck Castle is founded on hexagonal basalt columns that formed when the lava cooled; they are exposed at the base of the keep.
History of Hauneck Castle:
Built by the Knights of Haun, around the 14th century/Ancestral seat in Burghaun
1402 First documented mention/Conquest and partial destruction by the Hessian Landgrave Hermann
1409 The Landgrave finally acquires the castle through a purchase agreement with Johann and Heinrich Haun.
1469 Second destruction by the Lords of Buchenau
1483 Reconstruction as the seat of a Hessian bailiff by the Landgrave of Hesse-Marburg
1660 Abandonment of the official residence and relocation to Holzheim
Progressive deterioration followed.
The castle ruins had to be closed on August 1, 1981, due to the danger of collapse.
On May 20, 1982, after extensive renovations, the now secured castle ruins with a walkable keep were reopened. Since then, the ruins have been accessible again and offer a beautiful vantage point.

Lange Steine (Stoppelsberg)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The long stones on the Stoppelsberg have a very long history. They are made of sandstone and are approximately 245 million years old. They probably originated from river deposits. About 25 million years ago, the long stones are said to have been created by one of the active Rhön volcanoes breaking the sandstone into the square pieces as we can see them today. The long stones are about 850 meters southwest of the top of the stubble mountain.
The stones have always been viewed with enthusiasm. A drawing on the stones is assigned to the Neolithic period. The royal coat of arms on one of the stones is much easier to assign. It belonged to Landgrave Friedrich the 1st von Hessen-Kassel.
