Site of Haus Knipp Until 1939

Highlight • Historical Site

From 1620 the fortified aristocratic residence Haus Knipp was located here. The building, which fell into disrepair in the 19th century, was demolished in 1939 when the current dike was built. Today, the road leading here and the Haus Knipp railway bridge, built from 1910, are reminiscent of this aristocratic residence. Its predecessor Burg Knypp stood in the 13th century just where the bridge runs. There it was too close to the shifting Rhine and was repeatedly flooded, finally abandoned and rebuilt here in 1620. Haus Knipp stood the test of time for almost 300 years. May the beautiful railway bridge last just as long.

Cycle and Footpath Along the Alte Emscher

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This new cycle and footpath leads west of the extensive ThyssenKrupp plant on the piped lower reaches of the "Old Emscher in Duisburg-Stockum". It bypasses the busy Alsumer Straße and connects the Beeck pumping station with the Alsumer Berg through a spectacular industrial landscape.

Duisburg-North Landscape Park

Highlight • Structure

The park makes the 21st-century Ruhr area an experience. Peaceful coexistence of old industry, culture, nature and sport in many variations, as well as opportunities for cycling and walking. Meeting point for everyone in the area. At night, the illumination of the site is attractive.

In furnaces such as blast furnace 5, ores were melted into pig iron together with many other additives at a heat of around 2,000 degrees. Such a blast furnace ran in continuous operation for ten years before it had to be re-bricked inside.

Of the former five blast furnaces of the Meiderich ironworks, three are still preserved today - after the early demolition of two furnaces. Blast furnace 5 is the only one of these three that is freely accessible to everyone. It was completely refurbished again shortly before the plant closed and is therefore well preserved.

Today an iron staircase at blast furnace 5 leads up to a visitor platform. Here you can enjoy a great view over the city of Duisburg, the Ruhr area and the Lower Rhine. Watch out: you see more green than you might have guessed. The sight is particularly beautiful at sunset or at night when the lights of the big city light up and the park becomes a light work of art.

Blast furnace 5 and its viewing platform are open every day and around the clock. In snow, storm and slippery conditions, the furnace is closed for safety reasons.

April 25, 2026,Mammutmarsch Ruhrgebiet 30 Km 2026
What a great event that was again. Ran the 30 km in the best sunshine. The route was partly new, partly familiar and was wonderful to run. Many greetings to everyone who ran along.

Yesterday, during the Mammutmarsch Ruhrgebiet, I took on the 30 km route.

Although this was my 6th march there, the path led past many places I hadn't known until then.

A very nice march where everything was right - weather, route guidance, atmosphere, aid stations, and much more.

A very nice day at the Mammutmarsch. Primarily, this Mammutmarsch was chosen in the Ruhr area because of the proximity. (The journey from Düsseldorf was significantly shorter than the journey within Berlin at the Mammutmarsch in Nov. 2025) 😅. But the route of the Mammutmarsch in Duisburg was great. Crossing the Ruhr, the Duisburg harbor, a long march along the …

Yesterday my troop – three people (@Chris, @Kerstin, and @Markus) plus me – participated in the Mammutmarsch Ruhrgebiet and we made it the 30 km. It was my first time! Unbelievable how many participants were there. Pure madness! And we were really lucky with the great weather. An absolutely awesome event. 😎😀🤘🏼

Today I ran the Mammutmarsch Ruhrgebiet with my brother 😁 We chose the best weather for it ☀️😊

The start for the 30 km was in the Duisburg inner harbor. The route was very beautiful scenically, went a lot through green areas, along the Rhine and Ruhr, through parks and industrial culture 🌳🌲
The atmosphere was great all day and …
