From 1620 the fortified aristocratic residence Haus Knipp was located here. The building, which fell into disrepair in the 19th century, was demolished in 1939 when the current dike was built. In furnaces such as blast furnace 5, ores were melted into pig iron together with many other additives at a heat of around 2,000 degrees. Such a blast furnace ran in continuous operation for ten years before it had to be re-bricked inside.

Of the former five blast furnaces of the Meiderich ironworks, three are still preserved today - after the early demolition of two furnaces. Blast furnace 5 is the only one of these three that is freely accessible to everyone. It was completely refurbished again shortly before the plant closed and is therefore well preserved.

Today an iron staircase at blast furnace 5 leads up to a visitor platform. Here you can enjoy a great view over the city of Duisburg, the Ruhr area and the Lower Rhine. Watch out: you see more green than you might have guessed. The sight is particularly beautiful at sunset or at night when the lights of the big city light up and the park becomes a light work of art.

Blast furnace 5 and its viewing platform are open every day and around the clock. In snow, storm and slippery conditions, the furnace is closed for safety reasons.
