The Dietesheim quarries in the local recreation area

The former basalt quarries are a popular destination in Dietesheim, and are now an attractive local recreation area.

After the end of basalt mining in 1982, an impressive lake landscape covering a total area of more than 61 hectares was created here, of which around 22.5 hectares are deep blue water. In addition to the largest lakes, the Vogelsberg Lake and the Oberwaldsee, the attractive landscape is complemented by a number of smaller lakes. High cliffs can be admired as bizarre rock formations that are unique in the Rhine-Main region.

Around 120,000 trees, mostly oaks and alders, and almost 7,000 shrubs have been planted at the Vogelsberg Lake and the Oberwaldsee for recultivation. Rare plants and animals have found a new habitat here. Part of the lake landscape around the Oberwaldsee is now a nature reserve.

Easily accessible paths lead visitors to beautiful viewpoints, the highlight of which is the so-called Canyon Bridge. Extensive riding trails have been laid out around the recreation area.

After the end of basalt mining in the 1980s, a lake landscape with a total area of over 60 hectares, including around 20 hectares of water surface, was created between Steinheim and Dietesheim. The absolute highlight is the narrow bridge at a dizzying height between the largest lakes, Vogelsberger See and Oberwaldsee. And one more request: To protect the flora and fauna, please stay on the paths in the Oberwaldsee nature reserve.

Above all, the national monument on the market square, unveiled in 1896, marks Hanau as the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm and became one of their landmarks. The statue comes from Professor Syrius Eberle/Munich and perfectly expresses the intellectual collaboration of the two great scholars, just as the brothers were inseparably linked throughout their lives until their death. It forms the starting point of the German Fairy Tale Route from Hanau to Bremen.

German Goldsmiths' House, Hanau

Highlight • Historical Site

Hanau also describes itself as the city of fine jewelry. It has a tradition of goldsmithing that goes back to the beginning of the 17th century and, with the State Drawing Academy, is the seat of a leading institution for training goldsmiths. In close cooperation with the Berlin political leadership, the German Goldsmith's House was founded on October 18, 1942 and was based in the former Old Town Hall. Today changing exhibitions with gold jewelry are shown in the German goldsmith's house.

Why is it so beautiful on the Main? You can't get lost. :-)

On this day, the main thing was to get out! Since planning a tour was out of the question and I wasn't in the mood to explore at all, this Main tour was a good idea. Early in the morning you have the area around Schloss Phillipsruh …

Today we did a tour almost right outside the front door. We have walked this loop many times, but with such great weather and these spring impressions, it was particularly beautiful. On the Main we had a nice Komoot encounter again, Werner came along on his bike and recognized us. We had a nice chat 😀. In Steinheim we were …
