The bronze sculpture depicting two donkeys on the banks of the Rhine in Königswinter stands on a hexagonal stone base that is surrounded by three fountain bowls. The figures refer to the local tradition of riding a donkey on the so-called “Donkey Trail” to the Drachenfels or to other destinations in the Siebengebirge.

A plaque at the fountain explains that the Eselsbrunnen was created in 1984 through donations from citizens and institutions of the city of Königswinter. The casting was carried out by an art foundry named “G. Lotito Cologne”.
The bronze is a work by the sculptor Ernst Hermann Friedrich “Ernemann” Sander (1925-2020), who lived and worked in Königswinter-Oberdollendorf from 1963 to 2015.
