The parish church in Salz is already mentioned in the year 974, when it was donated by Emperor Otto II to the Collegiate Chapter of St. Peter and Alexander in Aschaffenburg. However, due to its location and the historical significance of the place Salz, it can be assumed that it already existed long before this time. In 1324, the church was sold to the Cistercian monastery Maria Bildhausen.

The church is built as a three-nave pillar basilica. A four-story tower, 50 m high today, was added to the eastern end of a Romanesque basic structure. Due to this construction measure, the two side aisles had to be shortened. In the 16th century, the tower was opened to the east and a choir connection was added.

In 1895, there were increasing problems with the large roof structure, which spanned the main nave and the two side aisles, so that it had to be modified or partially renewed. The main nave got its own roof truss again, and the two side aisles were each provided with a lean-to roof again, as originally.

On the south side of the church, the old sacristy was demolished in 1897 to be replaced by a two-story sacristy with a vestry and a lighthouse. This was completed in 1898.

In 1909, the three old bays of the central nave were extended westward by another bay. This extension includes a chapel on the north side and a staircase on the south, via which one reaches the two-story gallery.

The entire church grounds are surrounded by a wall. Within this area, all residents of the Salz community were buried until the year 1832.
