English Memorial on Schauinsland

Highlight • Monument

The evening ringing of the Hofsgrund church and the courageous commitment of the entire Hofsgrund population saved the lives of the majority of a group of 27 students from the Strand School in London-Brixton who were in distress at the Schauinsland on the evening of April 17, 1936. Any help came too late for 5 students between the ages of 12 and 14. Four of them could not be resuscitated by the Hofsgrund rescuers in the inn "Hof". The fifth student died just 10 minutes after the ambulance arrived at the Freiburg University Hospital early in the morning of the next day. Another was kept alive in the clinic. It was only in retrospect that the full extent of the accident on April 17, 1936 could be overlooked: a group of 28 people - 27 students between the ages of 12 and 17 and their teacher - had got into mountain difficulties and if the rescuers from Hofsgrund hadn't been there , even more people would have died. Completely disoriented, the teacher and the group finally climbed up the Kappler Wand cross-country in fog and heavy snowfall to seek shelter somewhere. But five young people had died that evening on Freiburg's local mountain due to exhaustion and circulatory failure.

A circular path lined with interesting wooden sculptures stretches high above the treetops at the summit of the Schauinsland. In the direction of the Rappenecker Hütte you come to this sculpture trail.

Right at the beginning the impressive sculpture "360 degrees dream time" is enthroned. The artist and sculptor Thomas Rees from Kappel has transformed the trunk of a mighty silver fir into a mystical figure. The silver fir stood in the Freiburg city forest for over 100 years, the dry summer of 2003 hit it so hard that it dried up and had to be felled three years later. Rees has carved an impressive face into the hollow lower part of the trunk. You can sit protected like in a wing chair and dream. Not only the magnificent view from up here, but also the individual works of art, including the high wind drill, also designed by Thomas Rees, invite you to linger on the signposted path again and again. "The interplay of place, history and material determines the shape of my works, which invite you to feel, look, walk through and experience," says Rees, whose sculptures are often created intuitively and spontaneously. The 1,284 meter high Schauinsland is a popular destination in the Black Forest. About 15 kilometers from Feiburg, it can be reached quickly by car or the Schauinsland cable car, which overcomes around 750 meters in altitude. It takes about an hour for the well-developed circular route to the summit.

Highlight • Viewpoint

Over 85 steps you reach the 22 meter high viewing platform of the Schauinsland Tower, actually called "Eugen-Keidel Tower". In good weather you can look into the Vosges and the Swiss Alps. The tower is always open.

Finally on the Schauinsland! Very popular at the weekend, even on Monday there was still a lot going on, thanks to the beautiful weather. Nice circular route with wonderful views and numerous benches.

Nice route. The uphill section is partly on grass, so be careful when it's wet.

The Schauinsland mountain rises to 1,284 meters. From the Eugen Keidel Tower, you have a beautiful panoramic view. The Schniederlihof is small but perfectly formed and also offers a fantastic view. They serve coffee and cake.

A wonderful alpine path leads up to Schauinsland, breathtaking panoramic views along the way and at the top of the viewing point. Contrary to the name, the path is not easy, but I would describe it as medium, as the path usually does not lead along paved paths. Children can walk the path and it is also exciting due to …

Today was the last of our three mother-daughter tours on the Schauinsland. It was supposed to be short, as my mother was a bit worn out from the last two days. The few meters of elevation didn't quite work out. But she bravely persevered.
I did the short tour with 1-on-1 supervision in the mine. It was great, next time …

Two short tours and the phone is empty. Komoot is really bad!

But the tour was very beautiful and strenuous. Wonderful!🤗
