Streuff Mill, St. Tönis

Highlight • Monument

The mill is the landmark of St. Tönis. It once stood in front of the Niedertor and belonged to the Archbishop of Cologne in the Middle Ages. Today's mill is from 1770. It got its name from the Streuff family, who bought it after secularization.

The Heimatbund got this statue in 1980 with the help of a
Sparkassen-Stiftung to the citizens of St. Tönis
for the 600th birthday of the place.

Johanneskirche Forstwald

Highlight • Religious Site

After the Forstwald district had been incorporated into Krefeld in 1929, the desire arose in 1931 for Forstwald to be incorporated into Krefeld, including by the parish, which was then approved in June 1933. The services took place as "forest services", but the Third Reich banned these gatherings in 1940. After the Second World War, the first services were held in November 1945 in a room in the school barracks, and in December 1948 a disused barracks belonging to the Todt organization could be bought as a chapel. This emergency church was solemnly consecrated in September 1949. In the mid-1950s it was decided to build a new church based on the plans of the architect H. Scharnofske. The Krefeld artist Gustav Funders was commissioned to design the glass facade and the mosaic (vision of the seer Johannes) above the entrance door. In 1961, the new evangelical church called "Johanneskirche" was consecrated by Joachim Beckmann (president of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland) and Wilhelm Veit (superintendent of the church district of Krefeld). When the new Catholic church in Forstwald (Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Maria Waldrast)) was built in 1970 and 1971, the Johanneskirche was also made available to Catholic Christians, which naturally led to ecumenical cooperation between the two communities. which still exists.

The forest is bigger than you first think and is the "green lung" of Krefeld.

Landwehr in Forstwald

Highlight • Historical Site

Two military conflicts took place at the Landwehr, which has a visible length of around 1,600 m in the forest forest: During the Thirty Years' War, the imperial troops were defeated here in 1642 by a combined army of Weimaraners, French and Hessians.

In 1758, during the Seven Years' War, the Prussians fought successfully against the French at the Battle of the Hückelsmay.

The Landwehr is therefore of great historical value and was therefore designated as a ground monument in 1988.
