Statue of Johan and Cornelis de Witt

Highlight • Monument

The bronze statue stands on a pedestal and is framed by a higher, projecting central section. On either side is a wall with corner pilasters and bevelled corners, both sides show a quotation from the satirical piece Palamedes (1625) by Joost van den Vondel:

ON THE LORD AND MASTER JOHAN DE WITT
THE COUNCIL PENSIONARY OF HOLLAND
HIS DEATH, ALTHOUGH UNDESERVED, HOLLAND WILL ETERNALLY SORRY
HE DIED FOR THE FATHERLAND, A MARTYR OF STATE
THE TIME AND HAS NEVER TAKEN AWAY
THE NAME AND REMNANT OF THE PIOUS
FOR AFTER THEY HAVE PASSED AWAY
THIS VIRTUE SHINES FOR EVERYONE

Dordrecht Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Originally when the building was built in 1383, this was a market hall. It was only later, in 1544, that it became a town hall. Every first Sunday of the month you can visit the town hall and view the paintings and historical objects found inside.

Steamship Pieter Boele

Highlight • Monument

The Pieter Boele was built in 1893 by the P. Boele shipyard in Slikkerveer in the style of the then common Rhine tugs. The tug served on the Rhine under the name “Speculant” until 1965.

In 1972 the ship was renamed after the name of the shipbuilder Pieter Boele. Since 1987, the ship has been kept in a working condition under the management of the “Dordt in Stoom” foundation with the help of approximately 25 volunteers.

Groothoofd Gate

Highlight • Monument

This 15th century city gate of Dordrecht is a national monument. The gate has fairly thin walls, but did not serve as a defensive gate. The Groothoofdspoort was intended as an elegant entrance to the city. The gate was restored in the early 1970s.

October 11, 2022,Biesboschpad etappe 5 Kop van het Land-Dordrecht Station
This route follows the Biesboschpad to Dordrecht station (12.5 km) and then via hiking nodes, which turn out to be next to the provincial road, back again (8 km); this is partly because the bus only goes twice a day (school bus); very nice stage vh Biesboschpad; clearly the more beautiful, historic Dordrecht; in stage 4 you walk 5 km …

Super fun stage and nice variation. Dordrecht is great.

Dordrecht achieved! And thus completed my third Long Distance Path! From the ferry along the Wantij over the Dijk. Wantij park and via a detour along the water into Dordrecht center. As there is no starting point in Volendam, there is also no official end point at the station. A beautiful lock along the old Dutch Water Line.

This stage in its entirety has already been walked as part of the Waterliniepad, but then in the opposite direction. I therefore expected a boring and predictable stage, but nothing could be further from the truth. Great day.
