Jesolo vs. Lio Maggiore river view

Highlight • Structure

Beautiful stretch along the Sile river. This watercourse originates near Treviso and, after crossing the Venetian plain to Jesolo, flows into the Adriatic Sea. The Sile is the longest resurgence river in Europe. In its final stretch the river laps the Venice lagoon giving life to a unique environment of its kind. The constant flow of the waters and the mild current are characteristics of the Sile that have made it navigable since ancient times. More recent evidence of this past are the wrecks of some burci, boats for river transport, which can be seen at the so-called "Burci cemetery", just outside Treviso. Although the wrecks are quite recent, having been abandoned around 1975, the arrangement of the walkways and the surrounding scenery make the experience very suggestive.

Highlight • Trail

Beautiful little-used gravel road to Lio Maggiore. Danger! The path ends at Agritourismo La Barena. The only way to continue there is by boat, which should be reserved in advance.

The "Gates of Cavallino," also known as hydraulic locks, were built in 1632 to connect the Venetian lagoon to the Piave River (now the Sile).
These structures were essential for facilitating river navigation and the transport of goods between Venice and the hinterland, connecting the lagoon with routes to northeast and central Europe. The lock complex allowed vessels to pass through a system of locks, regulating the water level between the Casson Canal and the Sile. Next to the gates was a customs building, used to control goods, which today is a historic tavern.
The locks represent an important example of Venetian hydraulic engineering and are immersed in an area of great natural and historical interest, which can be explored via cycling routes along the local canals.
