Sigmundskron Castle (also Firmian, Italian Castel Firmiano)
Southwest of Bozen, above the small village of Frangarto in the municipality of Eppan, Sigmundskron Castle towers on a porphyry rock, one of the largest castle complexes in South Tyrol. The original name "Formigar" comes from the Latin "formicaria". It is one of the oldest known names of a castle in South Tyrol. The building was first mentioned under this name around 945 AD, later the name was changed to "Firmian". The Italian name of Sigmundskron is still Firmiano.
Owned by the Bishop of Trent since 1027, the complex passed to Sigmund "the Rich in Coins", the sovereign of Tyrol, in 1473. It was only at this time that the castle received its current name "Schloss Sigmundskron". The castle also owes its name to its shape, as the broad complex is reminiscent of a crown (Sigmund's crown). The castle is also a political symbol for many South Tyroleans, as it was here in 1957 that the "Los von Trento" took place, a large popular rally under Silvius Magnago to demand independent autonomy and to protest against non-compliance with the Paris Agreement.

Adige Cycle Path near Grumo

Highlight • Cycleway

The Adige Cycle Path near Grumo is a particularly scenic and excellently maintained section of this popular cycling route. The panorama is impressive: the Dolomites rise majestically in the background, while you cycle along the smooth, flat asphalt path. The contrast between untouched nature, modern infrastructure such as the railway bridge, and the gently rolling course of the Adige River is particularly striking. It's an ideal place for a short break to breathe deeply, enjoy the scenery, and take in the harmonious interplay of technology and nature.

Our third stage takes us from Bolzano to Trento along the Etsch. However, it also runs mostly parallel to the motorway. In today's heat, it was a very strenuous tour, as there was hardly any shade on the route. For a change, we made a few detours to the nearby wine towns. Unfortunately, komoot did not record the tour to …

Etschradtour from Bozen to Trento. We leave Bolzano city center in the direction of the Adige. If the signs are very good, we drive through the Adige Valley, which is framed by mountains on the right and left. Trento has a historic old town. The Trento Cathedral Square is very busy today.
