We do this short trip twice a year:
1x without and 1x with snow.
Keep old memories of Ilmenau 1973 - 1981 alive.
The nice thing is that you sometimes meet 'old hands' from the TH/TU days to chat.

Today we hiked a small round in Ilmenau to the historic bobsleigh track, the Lindenberg viewpoint, the Bobhütte and the Fitzler spring. From the observation tower you have a wonderful view of Ilmenau 😉. Unfortunately, the Ilmenau balcony is no longer a vantage point, as it is completely overgrown 🙈.
