Fort Monte Enna

Highlight • Historical Site

An Italian fort built between 1910 and 1912, strategically located to control the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On one side, it dominates the upper Leogra Valley and the access from the Pian delle Fugazze Pass; on the other, it controls the route from the Xomo Pass and the Novegno Pass.

During the Great War, it operated only once, and unfortunately: it fired in the direction of Monte Giove and the Campiello Pass against the Austrians advancing during the Strafexpedition, but its inaccurate shot hit the Italian troops! Fire was suspended and the commander dismissed; from there, with the retreat of the front line, it was no longer used.

It is a complex, unique, and for its time very advanced fortification, built on multiple levels: you have to explode the area to discover its full grandeur. At the highest level, the battery is embedded in the mountain, with one side carved into the rock; It is surrounded by a moat and a large wall; long, dark tunnels, more or less hidden, lead from one side of the fort to the other. At a lower level, protected from enemy fire, on a large walled terrace, is the main entrance (now collapsed) and the sizable barracks; even lower, an impressive, labyrinthine tunnel was dug into the bowels of the mountain, containing artillery emplacements and observation posts.

Today, the fort is in good condition, although surrounded by evergreen forest, almost forgotten and hidden: during wartime, the trees were felled, leaving the view unobstructed.

Adventurous tour through the paths of Alta Val Leogra passing through the Via Crucis di Poleo, on paths almost entirely exposed to the sun ☀️ which overlook the town of Torrebelvicino and which often offer wonderful glimpses of the Little Dolomites now covered with snow 🏔️.

Nice ride, but with a lot of downhill parts that are beyond my limit (not Mirko's). Lots of fun and enjoyable sections. To be repeated.
