Michelin Borne d’Angle at Avenue de la Gare

Highlight • Monument

From 1910 onwards, the French tyre manufacturer Michelin (also known for its road maps or the awarding of stars to restaurants for exceptional cuisine) was looking for a way to provide specific information to drivers at intersections. The idea was a corner bollard (French name: Borne d'Angle), on which the directions of travel and distances to towns could be indicated centrally. The Borne d'Angle was intended to focus the driver's attention at the intersection.

The Michelin traffic signs have now almost completely disappeared from French streets. Their removal is currently being pushed further. A few examples have survived the test of time in places that are difficult to access, particularly where they are not a safety concern or where there are difficulties in removing them.
