Saint-Laurent Church

Highlight • Religious Site

We know nothing about the original building, that of before 1429. The Saint-Laurent church was rebuilt during the 15th century: historians have difficulty determining the precise period (see the box and the analysis made by Agnès Bos, heritage curator, in her doctoral thesis defended in 2000). We nevertheless know that the building was dedicated in June 1429 and that it has since undergone multiple works. If only part of the bell tower seems to date from before the 15th century, the choir is from the 15th century, the nave, from the 17th century, the choir aisles and the oval chapel of the Virgin, from the beginning of the 18th century. A classical style facade, reminiscent of that of the professed house of the Jesuits, was erected in 1621. The current facade is a pastiche of the 15th century, built in 1862-1865 by the architect Constant-Dufeux.
The general style of the church is flamboyant Gothic with parts in classical style. Saint-Laurent was retained as a parish in 1791. It became the Temple of Reason in 1795, then the Temple of Old Age in 1798. With the Concordat of 1802, it was returned to Catholic worship.
Without being very well known, the Saint-Laurent church has certain assets to attract visitors and art enthusiasts: firstly by its multitude of enormous hanging keys from the 17th century (the vault in the photo below in gives a good overview), then by its stained glass windows from the 19th and 20th centuries. Laurence de Finance, chief heritage curator, showed that the 19th century stained glass windows of Saint-Laurent presented a sort of history of stained glass of this period: from the renaissance of this art in France at the beginning of the 19th century to the production totally mastered by the end of the century. The 20th century stained glass windows are all creations of the Gaudin workshop, either from the 1930s or the 1950s. This page gives a very large extract of the stained glass windows which adorn the church.

Château-Rouge

Highlight • Other

The African market of Château-Rouge, also known as the Dejean market, is a true cultural crossroads in the heart of the streets Myrha, des Gardes and Doudeauville (nicknamed the “wax street”). This district is ideal for tasting typical dishes such as thiéboudiène, mafé or poulet yassa, while exploring the colorful stalls of African fabrics and clothing. A place where you can find the flavors, colors and atmosphere of Africa, in the heart of Paris.
