Belle Époque Houses of Mers-les-Bains

Highlight • Historical Site

The seaside district: after the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century, which connects Mers-Les-Bains to Paris, exclusive tourism from Paris is booming. It was very fashionable at the time to take sea baths. Along the coast, the new seaside district displays all the characteristics of the Belle Époque. Wealthy Parisians and other aristocrats built their second homes there, generally in an Art Nouveau style characterized by metal, wood, or iron balconies and bay windows with rounded shapes, colorful facades, and exuberant ornamentation. The Franco-Dutch architect Eduard Johan Niermans (1859-1928), (born in Enschede, became a French national in 1895), designed several houses in the district between 1899 and 1907. The district still has about 300 villas from that era and was largely designated a remarkable heritage site in 1986. In late July and early August, the Bathers' Festival is celebrated there, with hundreds of people dressed in the fashion of the Belle Époque.

Le Tréport

Highlight • Settlement

This fishing and port village developed into a seaside resort is now very busy in summer, which can be explained by its proximity to Paris and the lure of both the Côte d'Albâtre and the Côte d'Opale. It rivals in appeal its sister town on the other bank of the Bresle: Mers-les-Bains. This quiet place still has a number of remarkable villas in Belle Époque style. A very nice discovery.

Eu Castle

Highlight • Castle

Eu residents lament that their town is really only known to crossword enthusiasts, who are familiar with the question of "a village in the valley of the Bresle with two letters." After all, Eu has a rich past, in which William the Conqueror married his cousin Mathilde of Flanders in 1050, and where more recently, at the end of the 19th century, King Louis-Philippe set up his summer residence here.

The equestrian statue of Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, is a work by the Italian sculptor Carlo Marochetti which pays tribute to the eldest son of King Louis-Philippe I and heir to the throne of France, who died in an accident in 1842. There are two copies of this statue:

One is located in Neuilly-sur-Seine, place du Duc-d’Orléans. It was inaugurated in 1981 after being repatriated from Algeria where it had been installed in 1845 on the Government Square in Algiers.
The other is located in the park of the Château d’Eu in Normandy, property of the Orléans family. It was created in 1844 thanks to a subscription opened after the death of the prince.
The statue represents the Duke of Orléans on horseback, saluting with his sword. It symbolizes his courage and popularity, particularly during the conquest of Algeria.

Castle Park

Highlight • Castle

The castle offers a beautiful view of the 15 ha park, which is planted with beeches, including one from 1585, the Guisard*, which is protected as a 'special tree'. Visitors can enjoy the peace and quiet of the French-style gardens, the 19th-century rose garden, the rhododendrons, azaleas and conifers planted under Louis-Philippe and the Count of Paris. Also: old ice cellars, water features, terraces and tree-lined avenues.

July 26, 2024,Mers les bain river, countryside and cliffs
Very nice tour starting from mer les bains follows a small river with very good cycle road. Then a bit of uphill in the countryside and nice view from the cliffs. Perfectly ok for normal bikes, very few of road but still ok also for a road bike(bici da corsa)
