Joncels Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

The Abbey of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens in Joncels, better known by its simplified name of Joncels Abbey, is a superb Romanesque building.
Of what was once one of the most important Christian religious centers in Languedoc, only the church, the chapter house, and part of the cloister remain.

The simplicity and beauty of the carvings in this beautiful stone give you a glimpse of its former magnificence.

Lunas

Highlight • Settlement

This picturesque little village has been classified as a green station. We find traces of its existence until 909. Four hamlets were located below the castle which was destroyed during the wars of religion. Rebuilt in the center of the village, it is still inhabited. Lunas is located on one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. It also has the particularity of having a railway station.

Radliebe

Highlight • Other

On the way to Millau I passed the attractive little town of Lunas. In addition to great decoration (see picture), there was a bike station with an air pump and barometer. On the other side of the river, a short coffee break in the bar before heading uphill into the low mountain range. Lots of curves and altitude, but great scenery.

Serviès Valley

Highlight • Other

This departmental road crosses the village of Serviès, located in the eponymous valley.

It also criss-crosses the Monts d’Orb national forest between Avène and the Col de Layrac, which marks the transition between the departments of Hérault and Aveyron.

Very wooded, this road is a breath of fresh air on very hot days. The surface is generally in good condition, and the ascent to the pass as well as the descent to Avène are very pleasant.

If you wish to stop there, two lodges are located in the valley: the Cartayade lodge on the south side, and the relay of Marie-Claude and Jacky Theron a little further north. These are two welcoming places with a lot of charm, and you will be well fed and housed there as well as advised on your adventures. It is obviously possible (and encouraged!) to take a hike around the gîtes to discover the surrounding area.
