San Onofre State Beach gate

Highlight • Rest Area

Protecting the beach squeezed to the north by the defunct Nuclear Power Plant and to the South by the active military area at Camp Pendleton, the main route through the State Park is along the Old Pacific Highway, now essentially a campground road. While day use fees for car drivers are $15, bikers can access the park for free.

20.8 km

Miles and miles of a linear campground on the San Onofre State Beach cliffs. The Old Pacific Highway is now essentially a campground access road, much of it widened to accommodate camping trailers lined along the cliffs.

Pendleton Bicycle Route (open gate section)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Camp Pendleton blocks the free passage along the coast between Ocenaside and San Onofre for more than 10 miles. These first two miles in the North at San Onofre are only blocked by signs and poles; the resulting car-free bike trail is essentially a dedicated bike trail. Nine of those miles are only accessible with a Department of Defense bicycle pass, which has to be obtained in advance. The only office where the permit can be obtained in person is at the South gate in Oceanside.
