Guadalupe Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

Hicks Road winds around Guadalupe Reservoir. Here, you can see some of the best views of the lake. Please be cautious of cars.

Lower Mount Umunhum Road

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

If you prefer loops, you can use the paved road for a quick efficient climb up to Mt Umunhum summit and use the excellent packed dirt and gravel mountain bike trail to come back down.

Mount Umunhum

Highlight • Summit

At 3,486 feet, this peak stands as one of the highest in the region. It features a distinctive block-shaped radar tower that played a crucial role in the military's missile defense system. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of the entire area.

Mount Umunhum Summit

Highlight • Summit

Long closed as a military radar station, the peak has now become one of the most popular biking destinations thanks to the excellent, albeit steep, paved road to the top. There are several vista points, restrooms, drinking water, and information panels at the top and near the old radar tower.

Mount Umunhum

Highlight • Summit

Opened in 2018, on the top of Sierra Azul Open Space preserve the Vista points and the former radar tower on the summit of Mt Umunhum provide stunning 360° views

Mount Umunhum Road (climb)

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Well paved road reopened in 2017, climbing sometimes steeply in switchbacks into the Sierra Azul preserve from Hicks Road to the former radar tower on the summit of Mt Umunhum. It's a great workout, but don't be discouraged by the exaggerated 2950 feet elevation change estimate here by Komoot (in biking mode it even calculates 9750 feet): in reality it's closer to 1600 feet of climbing.

38.2 km

Guadalupe River Valley

Highlight • River

Shannon Road intersects with Hicks Road here like Shannon Creek flows into Guadalupe Creek. To the south the urban sprawl gives way to farms and forested hills. The roads unfortunately have no bike lanes.
