The Hemlock Stone

Highlight • Natural

A striking outcrop of red sandstone, the Hemlock Stone rises 31 feet (10 m) on the flanks of Stapleford Hill. Legend has it that this beguiling rock formation has associations with the ancient religious rites of fire and sun worship. When it catches the setting sun, it's easy to imagine why.

The site of the old Breadsall station on the Great Northern railway line that used to run from Nottingham Victoria to Derby Friar Gate station. The foundations of the station buildings have been rebuilt so it is possible to see where the platform, signal box, ladies, gents, waiting rooms, etc. were.

Breadsall Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This was the Derbyshire and Staffordshire line, the station opening in 1878. In 1953 it was closed to passengers and in 1962 to goods. This was quite a substantial station. The line then continued west to Derby Friargate and on to Burton upon Trent. East it went to West Hallam and Nottingham Victoria and on this station a shopping centre now stands.

Stanley Brook Crossing

Highlight • River

This shallow brook crossing is certainly rideable with a run up (after good weather of course), but there's a bridge if you don't fancy it. The track however does get very muddy!
