Newhaven Harbour

Highlight • Bridge

A canal was dug here in the 16th century through the gravel banks of the Ouse Estuary, creating a harbor sheltered on the west by the South Downs. In 1847 Newhaven got a rail connection with London, soon followed by a ferry service to the French Dieppe.

More beautiful and quieter than the cycle path along the A259 is the Undercliff Walk from Saltdean to Brighton: a car-free road right under the chalk cliffs. After passing the sea marina, the Undercliff Walk automatically turns into the beach promenade, where there is a lot of cycling.

White Chalk Cliffs of Seaford Head

Highlight • Natural Monument

Agree with the comment but I think this photo is actually of Seaford head, another 10k east?

Rottingdean Beach

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of Brighton’s less busy beaches and a nice spot for fish and chips (from the takeaway/cafe at the top of the slipway) while watching the sun go down.

The Undercliff Walk

Highlight • Trail

The Undercliff Walk is actually part of the sea defence along the stretch of coast between Brighton and Saltdean. It's a surfaced path which is also used by the new Charles the 3rd England Coast Path.

Black Rock Raised Beach and Chalk Cliffs

An ice age “fossilised” beach and chalk cliff, visible as a cross section on the current cliff face. Part of the Brighton to Newhaven Cliffs geological Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Madeira Terrace

Highlight • Historical Site

Madeira Terrace is a Grade 2* listed, 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton.
Originally built in the late 1800s, more and more of it has been closed to the public since 2014. This is because the local marine environment has degraded the structure and made it unsafe.

Due to the current level of funding we have for this project and the size of the restoration works we need to do, we’ll be restoring Madeira Terrace in phases.

Black Rock Undercliff Walk

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Great undercliff walk perfect for cycling, can be a little busy, obviously be mindful that salt in the are won't be good for you chain in the long term and you can easily get splashed when the wind is up, also when it is windy expect to go very slow...
