Highlight • Structure

Medinaceli

Highlight • Settlement

Medinaceli is a place that you should not miss on any bike tour in this region, because even if the climb up the city hill is a bit tedious - it's worth it! You will be greeted by an ancient Roman triumphal arch. It probably dates back to the 1st century and is the city's landmark. The Plaza Mayor is also considered one of the most beautiful squares in Old Castile and invites you to have a coffee under the arcades. The famous song about the Spanish national hero El Cid also mentions the place as an important border crossing for the knight on his journeys between Castile and Valencia. And from the castle hill you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over the vast plains of Castile in the evening.

Arab Arch of Medinaceli

Highlight • Monument

The Arch of Medinaceli, also known as the Roman Arch of Medinaceli, is a unique monument in Spain due to its triple arch structure. It is located in the town of Medinaceli, in the province of Soria, and was built at the end of the 1st century AD, probably during the reign of Emperor Domitian, although it was later associated with Trajan.

Medinaceli

Highlight • Historical Site

As it is believed, despite the currently existing doubts, Medinaceli was the old Ocilis (city that betrayed the Romans, during the Celtiberian wars). In the Plaça Major, inside the Dukes Palace building, important Roman mosaics are preserved. Much of its wall, castle (current cemetery) and various remains of the different cultures that passed through the town are preserved.
