The lordship of Haut-Bonlez had, in 1312, for lords Ripemont then passed to the family of Glymes in 1412. It became property of Hosdain by the marriage at the end of the sixteenth century of Adrienne de Glymes with Jacques de Hosdain ( or Hosden). The Hosdain and the Verreycken were both lords of Haut and Bas-Bonlez. The Verreyckens, who had become high justice lords, took pleasure in enlarging and embellishing the Hosdain stronghold. They transformed it into a beautiful and vast brick castle, surrounded by ditches and confined at each corner by a heavy square tower. It was reached by a wide avenue of lime trees. In 1643, Louis-François de Verreycken was created Baron de Bonlez. To this day he belongs to a family of Belgian billionaires.
