Santa Cristina d'Aro train station

Highlight • Structure

The old station of Santa Cristina de Aro was part of the Carrilet, a railway that was used as a maritime link between the main port of goods in the area, located in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, and the inland towns of the region. On April 10, 1969, it ceased to function and today the building is used as the local tourist office.

The old Castell d'Aro station was part of the Carrilet route and was used to cross trains.
It is highly recommended to make a stop to visit the interior of the station where the stationmaster's office and the wooden structure of the ticket office are still preserved today.

The Riudaura

Highlight • River

This river, whose name literally means "golden river", rises in the mountains of the Les Gavarres massif and meanders through the region before flowing into the Mediterranean Sea near Sant Feliu. Along its course, it brings freshness to the surroundings and irrigates the fields, although its flow is usually moderate, depending on the seasonal rainfall.

The Monastery of the Mare de Déu dels Àngels in Sant Feliu de Guixols dates from the beginning of the 10th century. The old walled enclosure had thirteen towers and five portals, of which only two towers and one portal remain.

In the 12th century, due to various battles carried out by the French army, the monastery suffered various damages that led to a restoration in 1317 in which the old Romanesque chevets of the church were replaced by new Gothic apses, and at the end of the 14th century it was finished. to rebuild the nave, also in the Gothic style.

At the end of the 17th century, the walled enclosure was destroyed by the French, which led to new reforms, such as the Baroque building of the monastery, leaving a complex that mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles.

Of the little that remains of the walled enclosure, the Porta Ferrada, from the 9th-10th century, the Fum tower (10th-11th centuries) and the Corn tower (11th century) stand out. The name of both doors (smoke and horn) refer to the methods used to give notice of attacks by sea.

Sant Feliu de Guíxols Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

The old Benedictine monastery is beautiful to look at - as is the rest of the medieval town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The Porta Ferrada is the symbol of the city and there is a history museum in the monastery. So if you're already here, it's worth stopping for a moment and looking around.
