Remedios Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Condado region, is full of Roman buildings, bridges and ruins. The Roman villa found in the parish of Angoares, a short distance from Ponteareas was an active township in its day and has a great deal of historic ruins. It is thought that a Roman road passed through here, perhaps the XIX, on connecting Bracara Augusta (Braga in Portugal) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga).

Bridge of the Partitions

Highlight • Bridge

Although its origin is quite possibly Roman, the bridge shows many medieval characteristics. The bridge has undergone serious modifications throughout history, especially in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Many legends surround the old bridge. In one, the bridge was the meeting place for a gang of thieves who gathered here to "split" the booties. Another is the story of a group of knights who departed from here to other places to fight against the Moors. Another tells us that seven brothers gathered here (Asunción, Lucía, María de la O, Marta, Amaro, Blas and Cibrán) who decided to preach the word of Christ. Their work of preaching and doing good was so great that when they died, seven mountains grew over their bodies. They are honored by seven chapels in area towns (Pesqueiras, Ganade, Picoña, Ribarteme, Lira, Areas, Guláns).

Salvaterra de Miño Fortress

Highlight • Castle

The original fortress was built almost a thousand years ago, back in the 10th or perhaps the 11th. The original wall that surrounds the castle dates from the 12th century and its main purpose was to defend the town from the constant attacks of the then Lusitanians (An Indo-European people living in the west of the Iberian Peninsula prior to its conquest by the Roman Republic and the subsequent incorporation of the territory into the Roman province of Lusitania.). In the 17th century, in the conflict of the Portuguese war of independence, it was completely renovated giving it its current appearance, although many defensive structures have disappeared over time. The plan of the fortress is rectangular and has no more and no less than 9,700 m2.

Very few years ago, the only way to cross the river and go to the neighboring country was by using the ferry that joined the two banks aided by a large metallic cable that made sure that the barge was not dragged by the waters of the river. The docks and the old border customs are still preserved.
