Alarcos Castle

Highlight • Castle

It is part of the Alarcos-Calatrava Archaeological Park.
The castle stands at the top, built on an artificial platform. Its plan is rectangular and it has nine towers, seven square and two pentagonal in the prow. It was occupied by Iberians, Romans and Arabs.
In 1195 a great battle took place here, the Battle of Alarcos against the Almohads, in which Alfonso VIII had to flee wounded in one leg. After the war, Alarcos and its entourage remained in Almohad power, which delayed the Reconquest for several decades.
This Battle took place in the plain that today extends between Alarcos and Poblete.

The old bridge of Alarcos is located in a natural confinement of the Guadiana river. Throughout history, it has meant an important step since, since Roman times, it has been integrated into the road that linked Toledo with Seville.
One of the functions of the Castle of Alarcos would be to protect the passage through this point.

Alarcos Archaeological Park

Highlight • Historical Site

The Alarcos hill is located on the left bank of the Guadiana river, 8 kilometers from Ciudad Real capital. Excavated since 1984, we find mainly archaeological remains that show the human occupation of this space from the Bronze Age to the High Middle Ages, with a long intermediate period of depopulation in Roman and Visigothic times.

Church of Saint Mary Magdalene (Poblete)

Highlight • Religious Site

A religious building dating from the 17th–20th centuries and mixes a popular style with a Latin cross plan. Its interior does not stand out for its extravagance but for its simplicity, with its mud walls and reinforced masonry in the corners. It has limestone ashlars and its central vault stands out, which is the most recent construction inside the Church.

Inaugurated in 2010 on Avda. de los Reyes Católicos, it emerged after the recovery of the pine forest that already existed on that road, but which "with its adaptation has given rise to a large park that will undoubtedly have more uses for the enjoyment of the citizens of those who until now had the pine forest".
Good place as shown in the photos to hang out even with the little ones, or have a drink at the restaurant there.
