Miramar Tunnel Passage

Highlight • Structure

The Miramar Tunnel is a pedestrian passageway that crosses under the Miramar Palace and connects Paseo de la Concha with Ondarreta. In June 2016, it became a 'MiramArt' Tunnel, thanks to the donation of the work of the artist Víctor Goikoetxea. As soon as you enter, you will feel that you are under the sea. This project unites art, architecture, technology and renewable energy. The tunnel vault, 29 meters long, is painted with different materials, thicknesses, shine and roughness that evoke the underwater union between land and sea; In addition, the work is completed with lighting that gives movement to it, expanding the underwater sensation. Those who pass through the tunnel generate energy with their steps through technological tiles.

Miramar Palace

Highlight • Monument

The Miramar Palace was built in 1893 by order of the Spanish royal family, and Donostia has been traditional since the end of the 19th century. the place where members of the royal family spent the summer. In 1931 the building was confiscated by the Republic and passed into the hands of the city administration. During Francoism it went back to the (no longer existing) monarchy and was sold in 1963. Cultural events and the Basque Summer University take place in the palace. Until the completion of the new Musikene Music Academy in the summer of 2016, the institution had its temporary headquarters here.
