Oud Groevenbeek

Nature Reserve

This is a paved cycle path through the dense forests of the Speulderbos. This forest is located on a moraine, which means that you will find considerable differences in height here - by Dutch standards.

On this crossing there are, carved from tree stumps, 3 different pilgrims. 1 with beer, 1 with jenever (gin) bottle, and with a sigar (and a dog). Let's hope that the cigar will last long.

Solse Gat

Highlight • Forest

According to folk tales, there used to be a monastery here, where dark practices took place... The abbot and the monks who lived in the beautiful monastery did not take the pious life very seriously. They drank gallons of wine, gorged themselves during meals and organized meetings with witches and ghosts. Together they danced until it became light again.

This went on for a long time. The monks partied, drank and enjoyed life. Until, sometime in the Middle Ages, a stormy Christmas evening put an end to the wicked excesses in the forest. Suddenly, local residents heard a huge lightning strike. The next morning a little boy passed by the site and discovered that the entire monastery had disappeared into a large hole in the forest. All that could be seen were some uprooted trees around the site, the brick path that was the access road and a deep hole.

De Laak, beautiful forest road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Great forest road, winding and rolling littered with beautiful trees. The path is kind of hardpack forest path. Great for gravel bikes and those riding their MTB's.

Kootwijkerzand

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Kootwijkerzand is a unique nature reserve. With approximately 700 hectares, it is the largest drifting sand area in Western Europe. Characteristic of this area are the irregularly shaped pine trees that alternate between the sand and form hills.

The sandy plain not only looks like a mini Sahara: the temperatures are also comparable. The temperature can rise to 60 degrees Celsius, while the night temperature can also drop below 0 degrees in summer.

Be sure to stop at the lookout tower to view this impressive area from above. On a clear day you can see Radio Kootwijk in the distance.

Winding gravel bike path through the forest

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Lovely narrow gravel cycle path through the woods of Boswachterij Kootwijk.
The cycle path is one of the few hard connecting paths in this forest and is therefore busy, especially on weekends, with many different cyclists at different speeds.
A real enjoyable path, certainly not a race track. Be nice, say hi.
