Bütgenbach Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

The Bütgenbach dam was built between 1929 and 1932. The main function of the dam is to regulate the course of the Warche river. This created the lake of Bütgenbach. It is a starting point for beautiful, popular hiking routes: for example, a 10-kilometer walk can be made around the lake.

Bütgenbach Dam

Highlight • Monument

There are many dam walls, there are higher, wider, more powerful ones than this one. This is not a superlative, but still unique. Rarely do you get so much insight into the technology and architecture of a dam.

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bütgenbach dam was a strategically important target during World War II and was guarded by the Belgian army. In an emergency, the sluices were to be blown up so that they would not fall into enemy hands. On May 10, 1940, German troops attacked the guard posts and overpowered them before the demolition could take place. During the subsequent occupation, the dam was further monitored and ultimately remained undamaged.
