The ghost section in the name refers to the ghost grounds, of which little remains because they were excavated in the seventeenth century for the urban expansions of Leiden.
The oldest spelling found, in a copy of a commodity list of the Sint-Maartenskerk in Utrecht from the tenth century, reads "Osgeresgeest". This was a Frisian spelling of the original name * Ansger-es-gaist. Ans changed into ox in Frisian; the same sound change can be seen in Frisian-related English, where the older form completely turned into goose. Afterwards, the residents no longer understood the name and associated it with harvest or East and therefore bastardized it to Oegstgeest and Oostgeest. The original meaning is therefore: "field on spirit ground, which belongs to Osger".
In the Middle Ages people also spoke of the church of Kerckwerve, when one meant the Oegstgeester parish church (later the Groene Kerkje).
