Pompeii Forum

Highlight • Historical Site

Step into a 2000 years old well-preserved desaster zone: The Forum, the most important square in the city around which all the main public buildings were located was busy that day when Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy.
Researchers believe that the town was founded in the seventh or sixth century BC by the Osci or Oscans. It came under the domination of Rome in the 4th century BC, and was conquered and became a Roman colony in 80 BC after it joined an unsuccessful rebellion against the Roman Republic. By the time of its destruction, 160 years later, its population was estimated at 11,000 people, and the city had a complex water system, an amphitheater, gymnasium, and a port.
The eruption destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. Evidence for the destruction originally came from a surviving letter by Pliny the Younger, who saw the eruption from a distance and described the death of his uncle Pliny the Elder, an admiral of the Roman fleet, who tried to rescue citizens. The site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599 and broader rediscovery almost 150 years late. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompeii

Pompeii is always worth a visit! It is still impressive to walk through the remnants of the city and you can only see a small part. We have been there several times and have always gone different ways and have always discovered something new.

The entrance is all the way down at the bottom of the stairs. The museum - included as part of the park - houses many antiques that were excavated from the sites.

Visiting the excavations in Pompeii during this year's motorcycle tour. It's truly impressive how vast and expansive everything is. Pompeii is also our southernmost destination. Tomorrow we'll slowly head north again.

Visit as part of a guided tour with our tour group. A guided tour is fine for getting a general overview and some information. However, if you want to take a closer look at everything at your leisure, it's better to go in individually (without a guide). During the approximately two-hour tours, you're just pushed through with the crowds and …

Italy Tour - Day 5 - Pompeii

A great visit to the ancient buried city of Pompeii, which was buried in 79 A.D. after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. A magical place that is still being uncovered from the deadly pyroclastic ashes of Vesuvius, the reclamation is now about two-thirds done. The impressive ruins here include the frescoed Villa of …
