Kluže Fortress

Highlight • Historical Site

The Kluže Fortress is a fort near the town of Bovec in northwestern Slovenia.

The original fortress was built in 1472 near Bovec on the road between Cave del Predil and Carinthia. Its likely original purpose was defence of Friuli against the Turks. In the course of the 16th century Bovec came under Austrian authority as a result of the wars between Venice and the Habsburgs. However, for the time being it remained as an ecclesiastical dependence of Cividale and Aquileia. At the end of the 18th century it was entirely under Austria's administration, and remained so until 1918. In 1796 and 1797 fighting took place around the fort, as Napoleon's army pushed through the Koritnica gorge. Napoleon's forces took the fort in 1797 by placing artillery at a higher elevation (where Fort Hermann now stands). The fortress was then destroyed. The current fort was built upon the site by the Austrians in the late 19th century. Fort Hermann, covering the higher elevation, was built at the same time. The two are linked by a trail and a tunnel. Fort Hermann was heavily damaged and rendered unusable by Italian artillery bombardment in 1915.

In 1903 part of Bovec was destroyed by a fire. What remained standing was ravaged in World War I, when the Italian-Austrian front (Battles of the Isonzo) crossed through the valley as the battle cut from north to south.

Mangart Saddle Road

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Mangart (in Slovenian Mangrt) is with its 2677 m one of the highest and most characteristic peaks in the Julian Alps. It is on the border with Italy. The highest point on Mangart that can be reached by racing bike is the parking lot to the west of the summit. The Stichstrasse is the highest alpine road in Slovenia and at the same time one of the most beautiful roads that you can ride on a racing bike in the Alps. During the driveway there are 4 short, unlit tunnels. The winter closure usually lasts until June 1st. You can drive earlier, but you have to expect snow.

Do not be put off by the percentage of the gradient! That's always relative anyway.
In any case, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking mountain panorama and a rapid descent.

Koritnica Valley

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Very beautiful valley from Bovec to Log pod Mangartom. From Bovec, it first climbs slightly up the valley before it becomes a little steeper around the Kluže fortress. From the fortress it is an up and down and afterwards it goes up and down quite gently to Log pod Mangartom. Fantastic views of the surrounding mountains! During my visits there was never too much traffic, most of them are probably in the Soca Valley after all.

Slovenia is gorgeous. It's like the Czech Republic with the Alps, only with better food. On the mountain climbs, for the first time in my life, I found here the joy of cycling, which I had known only from cross-country skis. If you ever come here, remember that your brakes should work perfectly, because the differences in height here are …

The lines for stage 4 of the small Ostalpen tour follow with a little delay, because unfortunately there was a material defect in the form of a bent brake disc yesterday after a (light) fall, which prevented me from continuing. So I had to be shuttled to the stage destination in Arta Terme 😬
