Old Harbour Hooksiel

Highlight • Historical Site

The North Sea seaside resort of Hooksiel with its historic center and large water sports area.

The old historic town center of Hooksiel with its listed harbor, the packing houses and the former town hall with its striking onion tower, which is now used as an artist's house, reminds of the times when Hooksiel was an important handling port for the city of Jever.

In the course of the largest German land reclamation measure, an approx. 240 hectare leisure area with hiking, cycling and riding trails, a harness racing track, tennis courts etc. was created east of Hooksiel, as well as an approx. 60 hectare inland lake, the so-called Hooksmeer, which is the old port connects with a new outer harbor. In the Hooksmeer there are several sports boat harbors, a sailing school with pedal boat rental, a surf bay with surf school and the water ski lift system, making Hooksiel very popular with water sports enthusiasts.

On the other side of the newly created dike, a fine sandy beach and a large campsite extend over a length of approx. 4 km. There are sections for nudism on both facilities. A sea water indoor wave pool and a guest house with a children's play area and a well-stocked library complete the offer.

The place is not only a paradise for every water sports enthusiast, but also a magnet for horse lovers: year after year, the big harness racing events with their incomparable flair are exceptional highlights.

Hooksiel Harbor Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The access to the Hooksieler Binnentief is directly from the Jade fairway, via a channel cut out on the starboard side, to the Hooksieler lock. The channel marked with directional beacons with a water depth of approx. 2 m at low water is narrow and tends to silt up. However, it is regularly dredged. In the outer harbor you can find a little more water on the muddy ground than in the entrance. Berths to wait for a lock can be found alongside fishing boats or on the sheet pile wall.

Although the lock is particularly important for water sports enthusiasts, a visit to the structure is also a real experience for other guests.
The sea lock in Hooksiel connects the North Sea with the tide-independent Hooksmeer. There is a wide range of activities for water sports enthusiasts here: the water ski lift and a surfing school are just a few of them. The Hooksiel Marina is also located there. In order for the boats to reach the marina from the North Sea, they have to go through a lock.

The water level is raised or lowered in the lock chamber so that the pleasure boats and smaller ships can overcome the different water levels of the North Sea and the Hooksmeer. The impressive process can best be observed from the seats to the side of the bascule bridge. During a lock, the bridge is folded up so that the sailing boats with their masts can also pass through the structure. The process is particularly exciting when there are many boats in the lock chamber at the same time.

The Rüstersiel Siel was laid as early as 1607 and after a short time the Rüstersiel harbor was one of the central trading ports for tea, candy, textiles, porcelain and building materials. During the continental blockade around 1806, it experienced its heyday with 1,345 arriving and 1,293 sailing ships - the thriving steamboat industry was Rüstersiel's undoing, and the port lost its attractiveness. In 1911 Rüstersiel was declared a North Sea resort: "If your goal is relaxation, not luxury, then choose the North Sea resort of Rüstersiel".
