The Church of St. Peter and Paul on the Frankenberge was built in the 12th century as a three-aisled, cross-shaped, flat-roofed pillar basilica. It stands at the highest point in the city. Their towers were part of the city fortifications. A church was mentioned in a document in 1108, and from 1234 it was also used by the sisters of the neighboring monastery of St. Mary Magdalene. Around 1240 vaulting, 14th and 15th centuries Gothic changes to the choir and southern cross arm, 1783 demolition of the dilapidated towers, construction of the baroque wooden dome, 1873/80 thorough renovation inside and out.

The Frankenberg Church is the parish church of the miners who lived in the Frankenberg district near the mines. The bell inscriptions and the celebration of the mountain thanksgiving on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday are still a reminder of this today.
