Bragadin Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Built in 1795, part of the Villa Bragadin complex, the chapel was built at the behest of Marco Antonio Bragadin (1749-1819), descendant of the hero of Famagusta Marcantonio Bragadin (1523-1571), in memory of his father Piero Alvise, a Venetian nobleman. On the facade a plaque reads: A FUNDAMENTIS REAEDIFICAUIT / MARCUS ANTONIUS BRAGADENO / M.D.CC.LXXXXV (Rebuilt from the foundations / by Marco Antonio Bragadin / 1795). Inside the building is preserved the spectacular cycle of frescoes by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison (1762-1844), rediscovered and identified in 1994 by a group of Cilien enthusiasts who identified the artist's signature in the episode depicting the Adoration of the Magi (GIUSEPE BISON / INVENTOR ET /FECIT). On the floor of the nave there is Bragadin's tombstone in engraved marble: LIE / MARCO ANTONIO BRAGADIN / DIED ON 3 AUGUST 1819 / LIVED 70 YEARS / TO THE MEMORY OF THE BENEFICIAN / PIUS BROTHER CONSTANTINO MARIA / PLACED THIS TOMBSTONE.
