STADION ZIMOWY in Tychy

Highlight • Rest Area

Winter Stadium - an ice rink in Tychy, where the GKS Tychy ice hockey team plays their games. The facility is owned by the city of Tychy. It has lighting adapted to TV broadcasts.
The Winter Stadium was opened on December 4, 1968 as an open facility (without a roof). On April 30, 1978, the construction of the roof over the ice rink was completed. In 1991-1992, the first modernization of the ice sheet took place - the plates and piping were replaced and the cooling system was modernized. On August 24, 2005, the out-of-date ammonia refrigeration system failed, resulting in the importation of a temporary refrigeration system. In 2006, a new container freezing unit was installed. A major renovation of the facility began in 2007 and was completed in December 2008.
Next to the ice rink, there is a transfer station of Koleje Śląskie, where you can get there by train from Katowice and park your car.

Pit Wheel (Monument)

Highlight • Monument

This mining monument, a shaft wheel, is located in Lędziny. This area is the former site of the KWK Piast mine. The building visible in the background is the former hoisting machine building, which has been renovated and now houses the District Social Services Center in Lędziny.

This location commemorates the region's rich mining traditions, and the wheel itself is a tangible symbol of the mining industry in Upper Silesia. Many other towns in the region, such as Radzionków (Mini Open-Air Mining Museum) and Zabrze (Guido Mine, Queen Luiza Adit), also preserve the memory of mining through open-air museums and monuments.

At the end of the 19th century, there were several water mills in Tychy, which were generally smaller, and were not fully prepared for the ever-growing needs of the growing city and other nearby towns. For this reason, it was decided to remedy this problem, which resulted in the construction of a new, larger mill, which to this day stands at Starokościelna Street.
The construction of the mill began at the end of the 1890s. Its original location was supposed to be a bit further from its current location, namely across the street. Due to the "Potok Tyski" flowing next to the planned construction of the mill, no work was carried out here, for fear of waterlogging of the area. The company "Andre & Felldner", which undertook the construction of the building, finally finished it in 1910. Its name is still visible on the building's ankles.
In the 20s of the twentieth century, it was supplied with electricity and was given the name "Tychowski electric mill". Above the main gate, the date of commencement of operations is still visible, although the inscription differs from the original. However, the initials of the first owners, Jan and Wiktoria Drob, plastered at the time of the mill's nationalization, have not been preserved. They were placed under the windows on the first floor, on both sides of the gate.
In 1946, the mill was nationalized under the nationalization act. Today it still exists and is privately owned.
