Kanzelhaus (Preacher’s House) at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Gdańsk

Highlight • Historical Site

The peculiarity of Gdańsk is the so-called pulpit houses (Kanzelhaus). In 1900, there were only eight residential buildings of this type in Gdańsk. Only one has survived to this day. The pulpit house at the Holy Trinity Church - also called "ryglówka", from the type of construction, or from the German Kanzelhaus, is one of the buildings that are part of the Franciscan monastery complex.

It was built in the second half of the 17th century in connection with the demand for apartments - gallery houses were characteristic and common for Gdańsk, because they were inexpensive. The apartments in them were small, with entrances to all rooms from the front - from the ground floor and the gallery.

Initially, it was inhabited by Polish language lecturers at the Academic Gymnasium, who were also preachers in the Polish church of St. Anne (currently the chapel of St. Anne is part of the Church of the Holy Trinity), later by craftsmen working for the monastery. The sources do not provide information about its fate or the extent of war damage. The building was renovated in 1990 (among the Gedanists there are opinions about a "massacre", not renovation - apparently a large part was demolished and built anew, instead of restored) and currently serves as a residential building for the Franciscan Fathers, whose monastery became the seat of the National Museum after the war. From the courtyard of the house you can enter both the church and the chapel, where there are statues of St. Francis and St. Clare.

Located in the buildings of a former Franciscan monastery, it continues the traditions of the Municipal Museum (Stadtmuseum) and the Museum of Artistic Crafts (Kunstgewerbemuseum). Initially, it existed under the name of the Municipal Museum.

Stone Lock

Highlight • Monument

It is a historic Stone Lock, built at the beginning of the 17th century. On the one hand, it protected Żuławy against floods, and on the other, it allowed it to flood the areas around Gdańsk, where the enemy troops were besieging the city.
